You might not think too much about your air conditioner, but the way it operates is changing soon. R-454B, a new kind of refrigerant, will soon be used in ACs to help improve energy efficiency and be more friendly to our environment. What does that mean for you? The experts here at S&R Heating & Cooling share the reasons behind the refrigerant switch—and what you can expect—below. Read it over, then call us with any HVAC questions you may have at 651-429-0001.

What Does HVAC Refrigerant Do?

Refrigerant is a chemical compound that absorbs heat and converts it to cool air with the help of your air conditioning system. While air conditioners have used many different types of refrigerants over the years, many of them have become obsolete, either due to negative environmental effects or lack of energy efficiency. As the newest refrigerant, R-454B greatly reduces these concerns.

What Makes R-454B Different?

The main benefits of R-454B, which is also known under the brand name of Puron Advance™, are its higher energy efficiency and lower GWP (Global Warming Potential). R-454B also uses electricity, which results in lower greenhouse gas emissions and is better for the environment overall.

Starting January 1, 2025, the Environmental Protection Agency will no longer allow manufacturers to build residential ducted and ductless HVAC equipment using the current refrigerant. R-454B exceeds the new environmental requirements.

Should You Switch to R-454B?

If you have an older air conditioner, you won’t be affected by this new refrigerant change. It will only be used in new models—so the next time you replace your system, your refrigerant will change as well.

When you do make the switch, you’ll enjoy higher system efficiency, which means lower utility bills for you. You’ll also contribute to a healthier environment.
