Call in the experts if these furnace DIY tips didn't work

Your home is where you should be the most comfortable—that’s why it’s so frustrating when your furnace suddenly stops working. Thankfully, there may be ways you can get it back up and running yourself. The experts at S&R Heating & Cooling put together some simple DIY furnace troubleshooting tips to help you maintain your home comfort—test them out, then call us if you need further help.

Inspect Your Thermostat

Sometimes the problem with a broken-down furnace is as straightforward as dead batteries in your thermostat. Replace the batteries in the unit, turn it back on, and set it to the proper temperature. Also make sure the thermostat is set to “Heat”—it sounds obvious, but sometimes the right solution is the simplest (and the one right under your nose).

Double-Check the Circuit Breaker

If your furnace stops working, check your home’s breaker box to see if a tripped switch is to blame—if you find the furnace switch in the middle or “Off” position, this may be the problem. Flip it to the “Off” position, then back “On.” Give the heating system a moment to respond before it boots back up.

Replace Your Air Filter

Changing your furnace’s air filter on a regular basis goes a long way in maintaining and enhancing your home comfort. Furnace filters trap dust and debris from flowing through your house, and as a result, can easily clog. We recommend replacing them once every one to three months for optimal performance (or, if you have a high-efficiency filter, replace it once every six to 12 months).
